Lonehill Nature Reserve
Lonehill Nature Reserve is the northern suburb equivalent of Delta Park — a free public koppie nature reserve embedded in the residential fabric of Johannesburg’s northern suburbs, providing accessible green space and a short trail circuit within walking distance of thousands of residents. The 5km trail circuit is not technically demanding and not scenically dramatic, but its value is entirely in its convenience and consistency: a 45-minute nature ride before work or school, available every morning of the year at zero cost.
The Trail
The Lonehill loop ascends the small granite koppie from the suburb’s western edge on a mix of compacted dirt and rocky path, with a minor viewpoint over the northern suburbs (Sandton visible on the southern horizon on clear days) before a short descent back to street level. The koppie terrain adds modest technical interest — a few rocky steps, some loose surface on the steeper sections — without ever becoming demanding. The loop is comfortable on a hardtail or full-suspension bike but also rideable on a well-maintained cross bike or gravel bike with appropriate tyres.
