Magaliesberg Trails covers the general advanced MTB terrain available across the Magaliesberg mountain range — the rocky koppie landscape that extends for over 100km along the Gauteng-North West border and provides the most mountainous cycling terrain within day-trip range of Johannesburg and Pretoria. The 30km main route covers multiple koppie ridges with substantial accumulated elevation gain, technical rocky singletrack and the sweeping panoramic views that make the Magaliesberg one of the province’s most rewarding high-terrain environments.

The Terrain

Magaliesberg riding is fundamentally different from the bushveld trail networks around Johannesburg — the mountain range provides genuine elevation, exposed ridge terrain and rocky technical surface that demands advanced skills and good fitness. The views reward the effort disproportionately: the Highveld plains on both sides of the range stretch to the horizon, and the characteristic blue silhouette of the Magaliesberg on the western skyline of Pretoria resolves into a dramatic close-up landscape when you are actually on the ridge. Multiple trailheads serve the range — Breedtsnek, the Magaliesberg village area and the Hartbeespoort approach all provide access to different sections of the mountain’s ridgeline.

Getting There

Multiple access points along the R560 and R104. GPS varies by trailhead: -25.8000, 27.5333 for the Magaliesberg village side. Download AllTrails or GPS route before departing. From Johannesburg: N14 west, R512 north, then R104 west.
