The Suikerbosrand Long Loop is Gauteng’s most demanding nature reserve MTB challenge — a 40km endurance route through the rocky Highveld koppie terrain of Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve near Heidelberg, with over 600m of accumulated elevation gain across repeated steep climbs and technical descents. The reserve is one of Gauteng’s most ecologically significant protected areas, preserving the Highveld grassland and koppie biome that has been largely transformed by agriculture and development across the broader Gauteng landscape.

The Long Loop

The 40km circuit begins at the reserve’s main visitor area and immediately enters the koppie terrain on steep rocky singletrack — the climbing starts within the first kilometre and doesn’t relent for the next hour. The route covers the reserve’s full koppie system in a clockwise circuit, ascending to successive ridge viewpoints that reveal increasingly expansive views over the southern Highveld plains, the Sugarloaf koppie landmark, and on clear days the cooling towers of the Highveld’s power stations on the distant horizon. The descents between ridge sections are consistently technical — loose shale, significant gradient and the kind of rocky surface that requires full concentration throughout. Black wildebeest herds, mountain reedbuck and various raptors are encountered throughout the reserve terrain.

Planning Notes

Carry minimum 3 litres of water, full repair kit and emergency food. The reserve’s exposed ridges are dangerous in summer afternoon lightning — start by 06:00 and plan to be off the upper terrain by noon. Download GPS track before departing.
