The Thaba black route is the technical pinnacle of one of Gauteng’s most complete MTB venues — a 15km advanced singletrack loop through the rocky koppie terrain of the Thaba Eco Hotel property, south of Johannesburg. Thaba is distinguished from other Gauteng trail venues by its hotel-quality accommodation on-site, making it the only destination in the province where riders can combine a multi-day trail programme with proper lodging without needing to drive anywhere between rides.

The Black Route

The black route departs from Thaba’s trail hub and immediately establishes its character — the opening rocky climb is steep, loose-surfaced and sustained, demanding power and technique in equal measure. The route design prioritises technical challenge at every opportunity: descents that reward confident line choice and punish passive riding, rocky traverses that require constant balance adjustment, and the kind of trail features that separate advanced riders from intermediate ones. At 15km it is not a long route, but the intensity is maintained throughout — it is not possible to switch off on any section of the Thaba black route without consequence.

The Full Thaba Experience

The black route works best as part of a full Thaba day — combining the flowing intermediate blue trails for warm-up, the black route for the technical highlight, and the hotel restaurant for a proper post-ride meal. Overnight packages at the Thaba Eco Hotel allow multi-day trail programmes that no other Gauteng venue can match.
