Cradle of Humankind Trails
The Cradle of Humankind Trails run through one of the world’s most significant prehistoric landscapes — the UNESCO World Heritage Area west of Johannesburg where some of humanity’s oldest fossil ancestors were discovered. The 20km+ loop weaves through indigenous bushveld and rocky Magaliesberg foothills near heritage sites including Maropeng and Sterkfontein Caves.
What to Expect
An intermediate route with moderate climbing on compacted dirt singletrack and gravel sections. The terrain is classic Magaliesberg bushveld — rocky outcrops, open plains and valley views. The riding is enjoyable in its own right, but the palaeontological significance of the landscape adds a unique dimension to this particular trail experience.
Combine with a Visit
The Maropeng Visitor Centre has world-class exhibitions on human origins. Sterkfontein Caves tours are available nearby. Consider booking a ride and visit package — both are compelling on their own and exceptional together.
Getting There
Take the R563 west from Muldersdrift. Follow signs to Maropeng Visitor Centre. GPS: -25.9834, 27.7456.
