Groenkloof Nature Reserve Trails
Groenkloof Nature Reserve has the distinction of being South Africa’s oldest proclaimed nature reserve, protected since 1895. This 6,000-hectare city reserve on Pretoria’s southern boundary offers 25km of MTB trails through characteristic rocky koppies and wooded valleys, combining quality riding with genuine historical depth.
The Trails
Two main loops cover the core terrain. The 15km Yellow Loop is the signature route, climbing rocky ridgelines for sweeping Pretoria views before descending through wooded koppie terrain. The 10km Blue Loop covers the lower reserve sections. Both alternate between rocky jeep track and compacted dirt singletrack.
Historical Significance
The reserve contains Anglo-Boer War remnants and heritage sites encountered on the trails — a genuine bonus on top of the riding quality.
Getting There
