Bethlehem Backroads
The Bethlehem Backroads loop takes riders out of town onto the gravel roads and farm tracks that criss-cross the eastern Free State countryside. At 45km it’s a solid half-day gravel ride through open Highveld landscape, with sandstone koppies, river crossings and farmland scenery that showcases this corner of the Free State at its best.
What to Expect
Mostly gravel farm roads on gently rolling to moderately hilly terrain. The eastern Free State is characterised by red sandstone outcrops, Rooiberge foothills and wide agricultural plains — all visible from the higher sections of the route. Technical demands are low but the distance and exposure make it a worthy intermediate effort.
Bethlehem as Base
Bethlehem is a well-serviced town with good accommodation, cafés and bike-friendly restaurants — ideal as a riding base for the eastern Free State region, with Golden Gate, Clarens and Ficksburg all within easy striking distance.
