Koppies Dam Loop

Koppies Dam Nature Reserve is one of the northern Free State’s most rewarding natural areas — a Ramsar-listed wetland of international importance surrounding a substantial dam on the Renoster River. The 22km MTB loop follows gravel and dirt tracks along the dam shoreline through the nature reserve, combining quality riding with exceptional birdwatching.

What to Expect

Gentle to moderate terrain on gravel tracks through open bushveld and along the dam edge. The riding is not technically demanding but the distance and exposure make it a solid intermediate effort. Wildlife — particularly waterfowl and wading birds — is abundant throughout the reserve. Look out for the reserve’s game including springbok and black wildebeest.

Birdwatching

The Koppies Dam wetland supports over 250 bird species. The loop passes several prime birding spots including reed beds, open water and grassland habitats. A pair of binoculars alongside the water bottles is worthwhile.

Koppies is off the R82 between Johannesburg and Heilbron. Follow signs to Koppies Dam Nature Reserve from town. GPS: -27.2312, 27.5712.
