Viljoenskroon Sunflower Route

Viljoenskroon in the northern Free State sits in one of South Africa’s most productive sunflower and maize farming areas. The 35km Sunflower Route follows gravel farm roads through this agricultural landscape — seasonal sunflower fields turning golden from January to April create the most spectacular riding scenery the Highveld has to offer.

What to Expect

Flat terrain on gravel farm roads through open agricultural plains. The riding is easy to intermediate with minimal technical demands — the reward is entirely about the seasonal landscape. February and March are peak sunflower time: the fields stretch to the horizon in shades of brilliant yellow against the blue Highveld sky.
