Smithfield Red Rock Route

Smithfield is a small town in the southern Free State near the Lesotho border — surrounded by some of the province’s most dramatic red sandstone geology. The 32km Red Rock Route follows gravel roads and singletrack through this rock-sculpted landscape, with the characteristic red and orange sandstone outcrops of the southern Free State creating a visually striking backdrop throughout.

What to Expect

A mix of gravel roads and rocky sandstone singletrack on moderately rolling southern Free State terrain. The red sandstone geology is the star — dramatic formations, natural arches and eroded rock formations appear throughout the route. Technical demands are moderate on the singletrack sections but the gravel roads are accessible to most intermediate riders.

Remote Southern Free State

Smithfield and the surrounding area are genuinely remote — one of the least-visited corners of the Free State. The landscape has an undisturbed quality and the riding feels genuinely discovered rather than packaged.
