Rosendal Mountain Escape

Rosendal is one of the eastern Free State’s most charming small villages — a cluster of sandstone cottages and art studios in a mountain valley between Clarens and Fouriesburg. The 22km Mountain Escape trail puts the surrounding landscape on two wheels — sandstone singletrack and gravel roads through the rocky Rooiberge terrain that makes this corner of the Free State so distinctive.

What to Expect

Sandstone singletrack and gravel roads wind through the koppie and mountain terrain around Rosendal. The riding is intermediate with moderate climbing on rocky sandstone terrain. The views across the valley and toward the Lesotho highlands are excellent and the village itself is well worth exploring post-ride.

Rosendal’s Art Scene

Rosendal hosts several artist studios and is part of the eastern Free State arts trail — combining a ride with gallery visits makes for a genuinely distinctive day out in one of the province’s most underrated villages.
