Clarens 34.71 Mile Loop
The Clarens 34.71 Mile Loop (56km) is the full Clarens experience — a demanding advanced-level circuit through the sandstone mountains and valleys surrounding the village that takes riders deep into the eastern Free State’s most spectacular terrain. Extended climbing, technical singletrack descents and views that stretch into Lesotho make this one of the finest long rides in the province.
What to Expect
At 56km with significant elevation gain across the Rooiberge terrain, this is a route that requires proper fitness, bike-handling experience and full self-sufficiency. The sandstone singletrack is engaging throughout, and the gravel road linking sections pass through working farm country with open landscapes and mountain backdrops. The descent sections back toward Clarens are fast and flowing.
Practical Notes
Start before 07:00 to complete comfortably and avoid summer afternoon thunderstorms. Carry at least 3L of water, emergency food and basic tools. Download the GPX track from Trailforks before riding — route-finding without navigation is difficult in the mountain sections.
