Commando Drift Nature Reserve Trail
Commando Drift Nature Reserve sits on the transition between the Amatola grasslands and the Great Karoo — a semi-arid nature reserve centred on the Commando Drift Dam where Karoo scrub, rocky koppies and open plains create an distinctive Eastern Cape riding environment. The 22km loop winds through the reserve’s varied terrain with regular game sightings.
What to Expect
Gravel tracks and dirt roads on gently rolling to hilly Karoo-edge terrain. Game viewing is a constant feature — black wildebeest, mountain reedbuck, springbok, grey rhebok and a variety of raptors are resident. The dam provides a scenic centrepiece and the rocky koppies on the reserve’s southern boundary create technical interest on the upper sections.
Getting There
Access from Tarkastad on the R344. GPS: -31.9234, 26.3456.
