Matatiele Mountain Sprint
Matatiele is in the high Drakensberg foothills on the KwaZulu-Natal and Lesotho border — a small town at 1,800m surrounded by dramatic mountain scenery. The 18km Mountain Sprint climbs into the rocky terrain above the town on technical singletrack with extraordinary views of the Lesotho escarpment and the Eastern Cape Drakensberg.
What to Expect
Technical rocky mountain tracks and singletrack on high-altitude terrain with significant elevation gain. The views from the upper sections — across Matatiele to the Lesotho highlands and the Drakensberg wall — are exceptional. The riding is physically and technically demanding: high altitude, loose rocky terrain and sustained climbing all require solid preparation.
Getting There
Matatiele is on the R56 in the northeastern Eastern Cape near the KZN and Lesotho border. GPS: -30.3423, 28.7934.
