Kaapsehoop Forest Path

Kaapsehoop is one of Mpumalanga’s most distinctive villages — a former gold-mining settlement on the Escarpment edge that is home to a free-roaming herd of wild horses descended from pack horses that escaped into the indigenous forest at the end of the gold-rush era. The 18km Forest Path explores the montane forest and Escarpment terrain around the village with the wild horse herd a regular trail companion.

What to Expect

Forest paths and singletrack on moderately rolling montane terrain through indigenous forest and grassland. The wild horse herd encounters are the highlight — typically 10–20 horses roaming freely through the forest and grassland, a genuinely extraordinary wildlife experience unique to this village. The Escarpment edge viewpoints deliver sweeping panoramas across the Lowveld 1,000m below.
