Set against the Groenlandberg mountains in the cool Elgin Valley, Paul Cluver Wine Estate offers a mountain biking experience that blends agricultural beauty with serious mountain terrain. The estate’s trail network winds through indigenous fynbos, apple orchards and along the edges of the Groenlandberg Wilderness Area โ€” a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve โ€” providing one of the most uniquely diverse riding environments in the Western Cape.

What to Expect

Riders move between the neat rows of apple orchards in the valley, through sections of ancient indigenous forest, and up into open fynbos hillsides where the views across Elgin toward the Hottentots Holland Mountains are magnificent. The Elgin Valley’s cool maritime climate makes Paul Cluver a particularly appealing summer destination โ€” when trails in Stellenbosch and Cape Town can be uncomfortably hot, Elgin offers a refreshingly cool alternative.

Post-Ride

Paul Cluver is most famous for producing top-tier Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The estate’s wine tasting room and restaurant are open daily, making a post-ride tasting a natural and deserved conclusion. The estate also hosts regular outdoor cinema events in the indigenous forest amphitheatre.

Getting There

Take the N2 from Cape Town over Sir Lowry’s Pass and continue through Grabouw. The estate is well signposted from the R321 in the Elgin Valley. GPS: -34.1647, 19.0823.
