The Banhoek Valley, tucked between the Simonsberg, Hottentots Holland and Franschhoek mountain ranges, is one of the most stunning and least-discovered mountain biking destinations in the Cape Winelands. The Banhoek Conservancy protects over 12,000 hectares of pristine fynbos, indigenous forest and mountain terrain โ€” and its trail network is part of the Winelands Trails regional permit system covering over 1,300km of trails.

What to Expect

Riding in Banhoek means committing to proper mountain terrain. Jeep tracks and paths climb steeply from the valley floor into the mountain ranges, passing through dense fynbos and occasional indigenous forest. The climbs are honest and the descents are earned โ€” this is genuine wilderness riding, not a manicured trail centre. Low traffic means genuine solitude even close to Stellenbosch and Franschhoek.

Winelands Regional Permit

The Banhoek Conservancy permit is a regional annual pass giving access to the Banhoek Conservancy, Franschhoek Wine Valley Trails, Paarl Trails and Wellington Trails โ€” popular destinations include Plaisir, Rhebokskloof, Laborie Estate, Wild Boar Trails, Boschendal Wine Estate, Spice Route and more. Excellent value for riders based in the Winelands.

Getting There

Access via the R310 between Stellenbosch and Franschhoek. The Banhoek Valley road branches to the right before Franschhoek Pass. Camissa Farm provides parking and a convenient base. GPS: -33.9278, 18.9845.
