Towering above the historic town of Paarl, Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve is anchored by the iconic smooth granite domes of the Paarl Rock — among the largest granite outcrops in the world and a landmark visible from kilometres around. For mountain bikers and gravel riders, the reserve offers a network of jeep tracks and gravel paths winding through diverse fynbos, with the unforgettable backdrop of the Drakenstein Mountains and the Berg River valley stretched out below.

What to Expect

Paarl Mountain is predominantly a gravel and jeep track experience, ideal for cross-country riders and gravel bike enthusiasts. Routes wind through fynbos-covered slopes dotted with proteas, ericas and restios, climbing steadily toward the granite dome viewpoints. The granite domes themselves require care — the smooth rock surface can be extremely slippery when wet. The network connects multiple points across the mountain, allowing riders to design loops of varying length and difficulty.

Paarl Mountain also forms part of the Winelands Trails regional permit network — a single permit gives access to over 1,300km of trails across Paarl, Banhoek, Franschhoek, Wellington and MTO Jonkershoek.
