Helderberg Farm MTB Trails

Helderberg Farm sits at the foot of the magnificent Helderberg Mountain between Somerset West and Stellenbosch, and its MTB trail network offers one of the most complete multi-level riding experiences in the Cape. Four colour-coded loops extend progressively up the mountain, each one building on the last, so riders of every ability find a suitable challenge — from the 4km beginner green loop to the 12km black section with 600m of climbing and two dedicated downhill lines from near the summit.

The Routes

The 4km Green Loop (70m ascent) is a genuine beginner circuit, suitable for new riders and young children. The 6km Blue Loop (150m ascent) is comfortable for intermediate riders and provides a first taste of the mountain. The 14km Red Loop (500m ascent) is the signature Helderberg experience — a sustained climb rewarded by extraordinary views over False Bay, Table Mountain and the surrounding Winelands, followed by a descending singletrack that showcases the mountain at its best. The 12km Black Section (600m ascent) is strictly for experienced XC riders — the upper section is exposed and technical, with two dedicated downhill lines: Downhill No 1 (1.4km) and Downhill No 2 (1.5km).

Important: Cycling permits grant access to the MTB trails ONLY. The hiking trails and all off-trail areas are strictly separate — any cycling outside the marked MTB trails is considered trespassing.

Helderberg Farm Experience

The farm is a full estate — Tea Garden, wine tasting, cellar, picnic areas and a viewing platform with one of the finest False Bay panoramas in the Winelands. Part of the Wine Lands Cycling Club network (Wine Lands South), an annual permit gives access to 180km+ of trails across Spier, Avontuur, Faure, Dornier, Ernie Els and Somerbosch farms.
