Eselfontein Farm MTB Trails

There are older trail networks than Eselfontein. There are bigger ones, and technically more polished ones. But there is nowhere quite like it in South African mountain biking. The farm’s history with the sport began 35 years ago when a 10-year-old Deon Malherbe started building singletrack on his family’s working fruit and dairy farm in the Ceres Valley mountains — long before the era of carbon 29ers, dedicated trail builders or stage races. What he created, and has continued to create over three decades, is now over 100km of completely hand-built, natural singletrack rated among the best in South Africa.

The Trails

The philosophy at Eselfontein is raw and intentional. Trails are not groomed or mechanically built — they follow the natural terrain, using momentum against gravity to create flows that are both sustainable and erosion-resistant. They weave among the farm’s most sensitive flora rather than cutting through it, and most can be ridden in both directions. The result is singletrack that feels alive and organic — technical without being artificial, challenging without feeling contrived.

The 15km Green Route is the recommended starting point: orchards, a first stream crossing, the legendary Blair Witch Forest poplar section along the river, and a return through fruit orchards. The 35km Blue/Red includes Death Drop (a technical climb into a blazing descent with sweeping Koue Bokkeveld valley views) and the full forest river section. The 65km Black is a full-day expert undertaking with sustained climbing and technical descents from the high mountain — consult Deon before attempting it. The full 100km+ network is a multi-day destination.

Eselfontein has been used in the ABSA Cape Epic multiple times — the 2010 and 2020 editions both featured its trails — a testament to their quality at the highest level of the sport.

Practical Notes

The day permit (R20) must be purchased at Erika’s Kafee in Ceres town (25 Voortrekker Street) before driving to the farm — it is 11km from the R46 turnoff on a dirt road. Accommodation on the farm (Eco Huts and Guesthouse) allows you to ride at will over multiple days. The annual Eselfontein MTB Festival in October is one of the great traditions of Western Cape riding.

Getting There
