West Coast National Park Cycling Routes
The West Coast National Park is a 35,000-hectare coastal reserve on the Langebaan Lagoon north of Cape Town, protecting one of the most important wetland and coastal fynbos ecosystems in South Africa. For cyclists, it offers a combination of flat park road riding with extraordinary natural highlights — from year-round birdwatching (the lagoon is a RAMSAR Wetland of International Importance, supporting hundreds of thousands of migratory wading birds annually) to the extraordinary spring wildflower season.
Cycling in the Park
The park’s tar and gravel roads are well-suited to road bikes, gravel bikes and hardtail MTBs. Traffic is light inside the park (mostly visitor vehicles at low speed) and the flat coastal fynbos terrain makes riding comfortable for all fitness levels. The 12km Geelbek to Kraalbaai gravel track through coastal wetlands is the most rewarding MTB-specific route — birdlife is extraordinary throughout, with flamingoes regularly visible on the lagoon shallows.
Postberg Wildflowers (August-September)
The Postberg section of the park — a private peninsula on the western lagoon shore — opens for public access for only 6-8 weeks each spring when it is covered in a carpet of Namaqualand daisies, other annuals and fynbos species that transform the landscape into one of the most photographed wildflower displays in South Africa. Cycling slowly through the Postberg in full flower is a genuinely transcendent experience. Advance booking is essential — the section sells out weeks in advance during peak flower season. Check sanparks.org for current access status and booking.
