What facilities are available at Jonkershoek MTB trails?

The Jonkershoek Nature Reserve entrance is roughly 9km from Stellenbosch town, where you'll find parking, toilets, and a Cape Nature permit office. Nestled in the fynbos-draped mountains just 9km from the heart of Stellenbosch, the MTO Jonkershoek MTB trail network is widely regarded as South Africa’s premier mountain biking destination. With 69 individual trails totalling over 48km of dedicated singletrack and 74km of jeep track, this is a trail system that rewards riders of every level.

What to Expect

The network is centred around a 10km gravel road Circle Loop, from which three main trailheads branch out: Saaltjie, The Point, and Quarry. Beginners can enjoy the Circle Loop and Up and Over Trail on manageable gradients with spectacular mountain scenery. More experienced riders will love the Irish Climb series of switchbacked ascents before dropping into the famous descents — Never Ending Story, Phoenix and Bennett’s — that are fast, flowy and feature-packed. Expert riders can push the black diamond DH lines including Roller Coaster, Rock Garden and Big Air, featuring wall rides, gap jumps and significant drops.

The trail system hosted the UCI XCO World Cup in 2018 and regularly features in the Absa Cape Epic route. Jonkershoek consistently rates 4.7/5 on Trailforks. Also part of the regional Winelands Trails permit network giving access to Banhoek Conservancy, Franschhoek Trails, Paarl Trails and Wellington Trails — over 1,300km of combined trails.

Getting There

From Cape Town take the N1, then the N2 toward Somerset West, exit at Stellenbosch and follow the R310. Turn into Merriman Avenue and continue approximately 9km along Jonkershoek Valley Road to the MTO gate. GPS: -33.9746, 18.9438.
