Tugela Valley Trail
The Tugela River is KwaZulu-Natal’s most significant river — rising at Tugela Falls on the Amphitheatre escarpment (the world’s second highest waterfall at 948m) and draining the entire Northern Drakensberg watershed. The 40km Valley Trail follows the Tugela’s upper valley on gravel roads with the Drakensberg escarpment and the Amphitheatre visible throughout.
What to Expect
Gravel roads and dirt tracks on rolling to moderately hilly river valley terrain. The Tugela River provides consistent water views and the escarpment wall to the west — with the Amphitheatre’s dramatic profile visible on clear days — creates one of the finest natural backdrops of any KZN riding route. River crossings add interest but require care after rain.
Getting There
Access from Bergville in the Northern Drakensberg. GPS reference: -28.7234, 29.4312.
