Spioenkop Battlefield Loop
Spioenkop is one of South Africa’s most historically significant hills — the site of the Battle of Spioenkop (24 January 1900), one of the bloodiest engagements of the Anglo-Boer War, where British forces under Buller suffered catastrophic losses against Boer positions on the hilltop. Today the summit is a national monument and the surrounding area is a nature reserve with game and extraordinary views. Winston Churchill, Mahatma Gandhi and Louis Botha were all present at Spioenkop.
What to Expect
Gravel roads and dirt tracks on moderately rolling to hilly KZN bushveld terrain with a significant climb to the Spioenkop summit. The summit views across the Drakensberg, Tugela River valley and surrounding bushveld are spectacular — one of the finest viewpoints in northern KZN. Game including white rhino, zebra and a variety of plains game are present in the reserve. The historical dimension of the battlefield adds unique depth to the riding experience.
Historical Note
The summit trenches and gun emplacements are preserved as a monument. Walk the battlefield — the historical interpretation boards and preserved trenches are remarkably evocative.
