Phuthaditjhaba Sentinel View Trail

Phuthaditjhaba in QwaQwa sits at the foot of the Maluti Mountains and the Drakensberg escarpment — one of the most dramatic mountain settings in South Africa, within sight of the Sentinel and the Royal Natal Amphitheatre. The Sentinel View Trail is a 20km advanced route that climbs into the Drakensberg foothills toward views that rank among the finest in the country.

What to Expect

Rocky mountain tracks and dirt trails climb steeply through the Maluti foothill terrain. The riding is technically demanding and physically taxing — high altitude, rocky terrain and significant elevation gain require fitness and experience. The payoff is panoramic: the Amphitheatre, Sentinel, Mont-aux-Sources and the escarpment wall visible from the high points are among South Africa’s most spectacular mountain views.

Phuthaditjhaba sits above 1,700m — riders from sea-level locations should allow an acclimatisation day before attempting the upper sections of this trail.
