Vrede Wetlands Loop

The northeastern Free State around Vrede contains a network of natural vleis and wetlands fed by summer rainfall — seasonal wetland systems that transform the Highveld landscape and support exceptional birdlife. The Vrede Wetlands Loop is a 22km intermediate circuit through this wetland environment, combining mountain biking with some of the best birdwatching accessible by trail in the Free State.

What to Expect

Gravel and dirt tracks wind through the vlei and wetland system around Vrede. Terrain is flat to gently rolling — the wetland landscape is defined by its openness and the quality of the light. Birdwatching is exceptional: cranes, waders, ducks, geese and various raptors are abundant. Avoid riding immediately after heavy rain — wetland tracks become impassable in saturated conditions.

Wetland Birdwatching

The Vrede wetlands support breeding populations of Blue Crane (South Africa’s national bird), Grey Crowned Crane and Wattled Crane — three endangered crane species in a single loop. The birding alone is worth the detour to Vrede.
