Kei Mouth Coastal Loop

Kei Mouth sits at the mouth of the Great Kei River — historically the boundary between the Cape Colony and independent Xhosaland, now the gateway to the Wild Coast north of the river. The 18km coastal loop explores the dramatic coastal terrain around the river mouth on clifftop singletrack and coastal paths with consistent ocean and lagoon views.

What to Expect

Coastal singletrack on rolling clifftop terrain around the Kei River mouth. The dramatic estuary — where the Great Kei pours into the Indian Ocean between high sandy cliffs — is the centrepiece of the route. Clifftop sections offer sweeping Wild Coast views northward. Some route variations require crossing the river by pontoon ferry — a memorable part of the experience.
