Cathcart Grassland Loop
Cathcart is a small midlands town in the foothills of the Amatola Mountains — surrounded by productive dairy farms, timber plantations and the rolling grassland plateau that defines the Eastern Cape interior. The 32km Grassland Loop follows gravel roads through this pastoral landscape with the Amatola Mountains as a constant backdrop.
What to Expect
Gravel farm roads on gently rolling to moderately hilly midlands terrain. Dairy farms, timber plantations and open grassland alternate as the route circles the hills around Cathcart. The Amatola Mountains are visible throughout — often mist-capped and atmospheric, particularly in winter and spring.
Getting There
Cathcart is on the R61 between Stutterheim and Queenstown. GPS: -32.2956, 27.1423.
