Drakensberg Traverse (Northern Section)

The Northern Drakensberg Traverse is among the most demanding mountain bike routes in South Africa — a 55km expert-level route through the high-altitude terrain of the Northern Drakensberg in the Royal Natal area with the iconic Amphitheatre — one of the world’s largest rock faces — as the dominant feature throughout the ride.

What to Expect

Gravel roads and mountain tracks on expert mountainous terrain at altitudes above 1,800m throughout. The Northern Drakensberg offers the most dramatic mountain scenery in the entire KZN range — the Amphitheatre’s 5km face, the Tugela Falls (one of the world’s highest waterfalls), and the wide-open high-altitude terrain of the Royal Natal area combine for an extraordinary riding environment. Expert fitness and mountain experience are mandatory.

Critical Notes

This route requires full self-sufficiency, multi-day logistics experience and a thorough weather assessment before departure. Conditions at altitude can change within minutes. Ride with a group of at minimum three and carry emergency communication equipment and overnight survival gear.
