Nkomazi Wilderness Trail

The Nkomazi area of southern Mpumalanga is one of the province’s most remote and wild landscapes — the mountain terrain of the Barberton foothills approaching the eSwatini (formerly Swaziland) border is characterised by dramatic rocky hills, indigenous bush and a landscape almost entirely free of tourist infrastructure. The 30km Wilderness Trail explores this territory on mountain tracks and gravel roads through genuinely remote Lowveld mountain country.

What to Expect

Mountain tracks and gravel roads on advanced terrain through remote Lowveld mountain country. Self-sufficiency is essential — no facilities or support are available on the route. The landscape is wild and dramatic with the characteristic subtropical vegetation of the southern Lowveld mountains and excellent bird diversity including the possibility of bateleur eagle and other Lowveld raptors.
