Phalaborwa Gateway Trail
Phalaborwa is both a mining town (home to the Palabora Copper Mine, one of South Africa’s most significant) and a wildlife gateway — the Phalaborwa Gate of the Kruger National Park is within walking distance of the town centre. The 22km Gateway Trail follows gravel roads and bush tracks through the flat mopane Bushveld surrounding the town with private game reserves on the town’s margins providing wildlife interest.
What to Expect
Gravel roads and bush tracks on flat Lowveld mopane terrain. The flat topography and mopane woodland create a characteristic Northern Lowveld riding environment. Wildlife from the surrounding private reserves — elephant, giraffe, zebra — occasionally crosses into the town fringe areas. The Kruger boundary visible to the east adds context to the riding.
Getting There
Phalaborwa is on the R71 in the Limpopo Lowveld. GPS: -23.9412, 31.1423.
