Marakele National Park Loop
Marakele National Park is one of South Africa’s most underrated national parks — a Waterberg wilderness with the world’s largest breeding colony of endangered Cape vultures, Big 5 including elephant, lion and white rhino, and the spectacular red sandstone scenery of the Waterberg Mountains. Far less visited than Kruger, Marakele offers a quieter, more intimate game viewing experience. Check with the park for current MTB access permissions and any guided ride options.
What to Expect
Gravel game roads on moderately rolling Waterberg bushveld terrain. The vulture colony — visible as a cloud of birds circling above the sandstone cliffs — is one of South Africa’s most remarkable wildlife spectacles. The Waterberg scenery of red sandstone ridges and mixed bushveld creates a consistently dramatic backdrop. Confirm MTB access with SANParks before visiting.
