Modimolle Gravel Grind
Modimolle (historically Nylstroom — named by Voortrekkers who believed the Nyl River was the headwaters of the Egyptian Nile) sits at the foot of the Waterberg plateau in a broad farming valley. The Nyl River flood plain nearby is one of South Africa’s most important wetland bird areas — a seasonal flood plain attracting enormous concentrations of waterbirds when inundated. The 35km gravel grind explores the farm roads through this productive and historically interesting landscape.
What to Expect
Gravel farm roads on gently rolling Waterberg foothills farming terrain. The Waterberg plateau visible to the west creates a dramatic backdrop. When the Nyl River flood plain is inundated (typically January–April), the bird concentrations are extraordinary. A pleasant intermediate gravel riding option in Limpopo’s most accessible tourism corridor.
Getting There
Modimolle is on the N1 north of Bela-Bela. GPS: -24.6834, 28.4023.
