Bourke’s Luck Potholes Trail
Bourke’s Luck Potholes is the most visited attraction in the Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve — an extraordinary geological formation where the junction of the Blyde and Treur rivers has carved cylindrical potholes up to 6m in diameter into the rock by the swirling action of river sand and water over millennia. The visitor centre complex is the best-equipped facility in the canyon reserve. The 10km trail loop explores the surrounding reserve terrain on easy gravel paths.
What to Expect
Easy gravel paths on flat to very gently rolling canyon reserve terrain. The primary attraction is the potholes themselves and the canyon views from the surrounding viewpoints — plan to spend significant time exploring the geological formation on foot before or after the ride. Wildlife including klipspringer, water mongoose and the extraordinary birdlife of the canyon are present throughout.
Getting There
Bourke’s Luck Potholes on the R532, 20km north of Graskop. GPS: -24.6623, 30.8056.
