Lydenburg Mountain Ascent
Lydenburg (Mashishing) sits at the foot of the Drakensberg Escarpment in Mpumalanga — a highland town with the dramatic mountain terrain of the De Kaap and Ohrigstad valleys to the east. The 30km Mountain Ascent climbs from town into the Escarpment terrain on gravel tracks with sustained elevation gain and progressively spectacular mountain views.
What to Expect
Gravel mountain tracks and singletrack on advanced terrain with significant elevation gain above 1,800m. The Escarpment views from the upper sections — across the Ohrigstad valley and into the Blyde River Canyon area — are exceptional. The sustained climb is physically demanding and the mountain terrain requires full preparation. The descent reward is proportional to the climbing effort.
Getting There
Lydenburg is on the R36. GPS: -25.1023, 30.4423.
