The Wild Coast 40km Challenge is the Eastern Cape’s signature big day out on a mountain bike — a 40km epic along one of the most spectacular and least-ridden stretches of coastline in South Africa. The Wild Coast between Coffee Bay and Hole in the Wall is a landscape of extraordinary beauty: sheer sea cliffs, pristine beaches, river estuaries, Xhosa homesteads on the hilltops and the relentless blue of the Indian Ocean throughout.

What to Expect

Clifftop singletrack, coastal paths, beach sections and river crossings on sustained advanced terrain. The challenge is both physical and logistical — 40km of varied coastal terrain with no support facilities requires full self-sufficiency. The river crossings (potentially 5–8 depending on conditions) are the critical variable: manageable ankle-deep in dry conditions, impassable after heavy rain. The Hole in the Wall sea arch is the iconic midpoint reward.

The Wild Coast Character

The Wild Coast is one of South Africa’s most culturally and ecologically intact coastlines — Mpondo and Xhosa communities have lived on these hills for centuries and their homesteads, cattle and traditional land use are integral to the landscape. Riding here is a genuine cultural and natural immersion. Treat all community members with respect and ask permission before photographing people or homesteads.

Logistics

The 40km route works as either a point-to-point from Coffee Bay to Hole in the Wall (with vehicle shuttle) or as a tough loop. Arrange accommodation in advance — Coffee Bay Resort and the Hole in the Wall Hotel are the nearest options. Start at first light. Carry 3L+ water, full emergency supplies and a charged communication device. Download GPX route before leaving as signage is non-existent.

Getting There

Coffee Bay is accessed via Mthatha on the R61 and R564. GPS: -31.9734, 29.1312.
