Mthatha Dam Ride
Mthatha Dam Nature Reserve surrounds the main water supply dam for the Wild Coast’s largest town — a protected area in the hinterland above Mthatha with game including reedbuck, bushbuck and a variety of plains species. The 20km loop follows gravel tracks along the dam shoreline through the reserve’s varied terrain.
What to Expect
Gravel tracks and dirt roads on gently rolling to moderately hilly dam shoreline terrain. The dam provides consistent water views and the reserve’s game and birdlife adds interest throughout. The landscape is typical Eastern Cape coastal hinterland — rolling grassland hills, riverine forest patches and the characteristic subtropical vegetation of the Wild Coast.
Getting There
From Mthatha take the N2 north and follow signs to the Mthatha Dam Nature Reserve. GPS: -31.5789, 28.7523.
