Slanghoek MTB Trail — Rawsonville

The Slanghoek Valley is one of the most visually dramatic wine valleys in the Western Cape — a narrow mountain corridor above Rawsonville where the Slanghoek Mountains rise steeply from the valley floor on both sides, enclosing the estate in a landscape that regularly stops visitors mid-stride. The Slanghoek MTB Trail threads through this spectacular setting on 13km of gravel road and jeep track, making it one of the most accessible and rewarding beginner MTB experiences in the Cape.

What to Expect

The main 13km loop is rated intermediate — suitable for beginners who are reasonably fit, with no sections requiring significant technical skill. The terrain follows farm roads and jeep tracks past vineyards, through valley fynbos and alongside mountain streams, with two or three stream crossings that add character and cool the tyres on hot days. Game sightings are common — springbok and other antelope share the valley. The views of the enclosing Slanghoek Mountains are exceptional throughout.

For more experienced riders, an additional 4km extended black loop adds steep climbs, technical downhills and challenging terrain — transforming the relaxed farm experience into a proper mountain biking challenge. The extended loop is rated at about 4/5 difficulty.

Mountain2Mountain MTB Classic

Slanghoek hosts the annual Mountain2Mountain MTB Classic, which uses both the farm trails and the surrounding mountain terrain for 33km and 63km race routes — rated by participants as one of the toughest mountain bike races in the Western Cape due to its mix of rocky, river, swamp and sandy terrain. The race regularly surprises riders who underestimate the difficulty based on the accessibility of the day-trail.
