Voortrekker Monument Trails
The Voortrekker Monument is one of South Africa’s most recognisable landmarks — a massive granite monument south of Pretoria built to commemorate the Voortrekkers and inaugurated in 1949. The monument’s extensive grounds on a koppie overlooking Pretoria provide the setting for a 12km MTB trail that combines moderate koppie climbing with one of the most historically layered outdoor settings in the province.
The Trails
The main 12km loop uses singletrack and jeep track through the rocky koppie terrain of the monument grounds and immediately surrounding area — moderate climbs onto the ridgeline with expanding views over Pretoria to the north, the Magaliesberg on the western horizon, and the monument itself visible from multiple points on the upper trail sections. The historical significance of the landscape adds a dimension to the ride that purely recreational trail networks cannot offer: the koppie terrain around the monument was fought over in the Anglo-Boer War and has been a site of national significance for over a century. The shorter 6km circuit focuses on the most scenic and historically significant sections for riders who want a shorter but still rewarding experience.
