Wepener Border Trail

Wepener sits near the Makhaleng River on the Lesotho border in the southern Free State — a quiet border town surrounded by semi-arid plains that transition toward the Maluti Mountain foothills on the Lesotho side. The 28km Border Trail explores the gravel roads through this transitional landscape, with the Caledon River valley and distant Lesotho highlands providing a distinctive backdrop.

What to Expect

Gravel roads and dirt tracks on flat to gently rolling semi-arid terrain. The landscape has the spare, arid quality of the southern Free State — sparse scrub vegetation, rocky outcrops and the vast open sky. The Lesotho border proximity gives the route an international dimension — the highlands visible across the river are a different country and a completely different landscape.
