Van Stadens Wildflower Reserve Trail

The Van Stadens Wildflower Reserve is one of South Africa’s most botanically significant small reserves — a municipal nature reserve protecting a remarkable concentration of Eastern Cape fynbos on the dramatic rocky terrain above the Van Stadens River gorge. The reserve is famous for its spectacular wildflower displays in spring (August–October) when hundreds of endemic species bloom simultaneously.

What to Expect

Fynbos singletrack and gravel tracks on moderately technical rocky koppie terrain. The Van Stadens Gorge is visible on the lower sections of the route — a dramatic river gorge flanked by fynbos-covered rocky slopes that gives the reserve its distinctive character. The botanical diversity is extraordinary: over 600 plant species have been recorded in the reserve, with concentrations of endemic ericas, proteas and restios.

The Spring Wildflower Spectacle

Visiting in August–October transforms the riding experience — the fynbos hillsides are carpeted in colour as hundreds of endemic wildflower species bloom in succession. Rides during the peak of flowering season (September–October) are among the most visually extraordinary cycling experiences in the Eastern Cape.
