Sani Pass Ascent

Sani Pass is South Africa’s most celebrated mountain pass — a 8km, 1,332m vertical gravel ascent from the KZN Drakensberg foothills into Lesotho at 2,874m above sea level. The pass road, originally a bridle path used to supply Basotho mountain communities, is accessible only by 4×4 vehicle and mountain bike. Riding to the top is a bucket-list achievement for South African cyclists.

What to Expect

Extremely steep, loose gravel pass road on expert mountain terrain with 1,332m of vertical gain over 8km — an average gradient of 16.5% with sections exceeding 33%. The riding is brutal and relentless: most riders walk significant sections on their first ascent. The reward is proportional to the suffering — the views from Sani Top across the Drakensberg and into Lesotho are among the finest in southern Africa.

Critical Notes

Carry full cold-weather gear — conditions at 2,874m can change to snow within minutes at any time of year. Check border post hours and ensure current documentation for crossing into Lesotho. The Sani Top Chalet is the highest pub in Africa — a beer at the top is mandatory.
