Orkney Vaal River Loop

Orkney is a gold-mining town on the Vaal River in the southern North West Province — a modest urban centre in the mining belt south of Klerksdorp where the Vaal River forms the boundary with the Free State. The 20km Vaal River Loop follows gravel roads along the river’s North West bank through floodplain farmland and riparian vegetation with excellent waterbird viewing throughout.

What to Expect

Easy gravel roads on flat Vaal River floodplain terrain. The Vaal River’s riparian vegetation — river willows, reeds and the diverse wetland birdlife of the floodplain — creates a pleasant riverine riding environment. Darters, herons, kingfishers and the varied waterbirds of the interior river system are regularly visible.
