What is the best time of year to ride MTB trails in Montagu?

Montagu's Klein Karoo climate makes it rideable year-round, but spring (August–October) and autumn (March–May) offer the most comfortable conditions — mild temperatures, clear skies, and stunning wildflower scenery in spring. Summer can be extremely hot, so early morning starts are essential. Winter days are generally dry and crisp, ideal for big mountain efforts without the heat.

Day Permit (R50):
Day permits provide you with access to the trails including the gates code.

Annual Permit (R500):
Annual permits are valid from 1 February 2026 – 31 January 2027. These permits provide you access to the trails including the gate codes.

With every permit purchase an indemnity form needs to be signed per rider. You can select “I Agree” in the Google Form, or download it below, fill in and bring it with you or complete when you buy your permit.

Should the Tourism Office be closed, you can get permits at Flying Feet or at the Montagu Country Hotel reception, both on the same premises.

Complete your form online, make payment using Snapscan or Credit Card when there and collect your board. Boards need to be displayed at all times.

Orange Easy: Expect: Relatively flat, wide, and smooth trails. Gentle climbs, descents, rollers and berms, with easy to avoid features such as rocks and potholes. Surface might be loose, uneven or muddy at times.
Green Easy: Expect: Relatively flat, wide, and smooth trails. Gentle climbs, descents, rollers and berms, with easy to avoid features such as rocks and potholes. Surface might be loose, uneven or muddy at times.
Blue Moderate: Expect: A mixture of climbs and descents with moderate gradients, technical features like tree roots and rock steps; jumps and berms. Rollable features at controlled speed. Variable surfaces.
Black Difficult: Expect: A mixture of steep climbs, descents and / or avoidable features. Larger jumps, berms and rollable features at controlled speed. Technical features such as tree roots, drop-offs and large rocks. Very variable surfaces.
