De Hoop Nature Reserve is one of the most extraordinary natural areas in South Africa — a 34,000-hectare UNESCO Ramsar World Heritage Site on the Overberg coast that protects the world’s smallest and most threatened plant kingdom. For cyclists, it offers something found nowhere else in the Western Cape: the experience of riding through pristine lowland fynbos while bontebok, Cape mountain zebra, eland, baboons and ostrich scatter across the jeep tracks ahead, with southern right whales breaching in the marine reserve just offshore.

The MTB Routes

Five dedicated MTB routes were established by Overberg MTB Events and Cale Trails, all starting and finishing at Die Opstal, the main accommodation hub. Route 1 (De Hoop Vlei MTB, 12km or 19km) is the signature ride — limestone and rocky jeep tracks with sweeping views of the vlei, the historic Du Mond House and constant game sightings. The shorter 12km loop is accessible to any fitness level; the extended 19km to Melkkamer suits stronger riders. Route 2 (Tierhoek, 10km) is the easiest option — flat open tracks ideal for beginners or warm-up legs. Route 3 (Koppie Alleen, 18km) crosses to the eastern reserve with eland herds and the Dronkvlei Dash Strava segment, finishing at the Koppie Alleen whale-watching viewpoint — one of the finest vantage points for southern right whales in South Africa.

Routes 4 and 5 push into more challenging territory — sandy coastal dune terrain and the newer Buchu Camp track north of the vlei, built specifically for the De Hoop Vlei MTB Experience event.

Events

The De Hoop Vlei MTB Stage Race and the De Hoop Vlei Sunset Scramble (Route 1) are annual events hosted within the reserve, drawing riders from across the Western Cape for the unique combination of game, scenery and cycling that De Hoop provides. MTB training camps with UCI-accredited coaching are also offered through the De Hoop Collection.

Getting There

De Hoop is 3 hours from Cape Town. Take the N2 toward Bredasdorp, turn right on the R319 toward Swellendam, then right after 6km toward De Hoop/Malgas. Follow the gravel road 33km to the reserve entrance — allow 45 minutes. GPS: -34.0561, 20.4731. Reserve office: +27 28 542 1253.
