Louis Trichardt Forest Loop

The Soutpansberg (Salt Pan Mountain) is the northernmost mountain range in South Africa — a dramatic east-west ridge above Louis Trichardt that forms the boundary between the savanna of the South African interior and the subtropical vegetation of the Limpopo River valley. The mountain’s forests — the Entabeni Forest with its 3-4 day trail options and the Hangklip Forest with five routes from beginner to moderate — are accessible on forestry roads with the appropriate permit.

What to Expect

Forestry roads and gravel tracks on moderately hilly mountain terrain through indigenous forest and bluegum plantation. The Soutpansberg indigenous forest is botanically extraordinary — a high-rainfall forest system with species found nowhere else in South Africa. The Kremetart Route up the mountain is one of the steeper and more dramatic options available in the permit network.
