Mount Frere Forest Trail
Mount Frere (eMaxesibeni) sits in the high-rainfall forest zone above the Pondoland Wild Coast — a highland town surrounded by fragments of indigenous subtropical forest that characterise this transition zone between the Drakensberg highlands and the coastal forests below. The 22km Forest Trail explores the forest tracks around the town in a lush, birdlife-rich riding environment.
What to Expect
Forest tracks and gravel roads through subtropical forest and grassland on moderately hilly terrain. The forest sections are dense and humid — a classic Eastern Cape coastal forest environment with fig trees, forest raptors and diverse birdlife. Open grassland sections provide views across the Pondoland landscape toward the coast.
