Port St Johns is the Wild Coast’s most dramatic town — set at the mouth of the Mzimvubu River where the water forces through a spectacular gorge between the Gates of St Johns (two massive cliffs). The 20km Cliffside Ride exploits this extraordinary coastal topography on clifftop singletrack between the gates, Second Beach and the surrounding coastal terrain.

What to Expect

Rocky clifftop singletrack on demanding coastal terrain with spectacular views throughout. The Gates of St Johns — towering rock faces flanking the river mouth — provide an iconic backdrop. Second Beach is one of South Africa’s most beautiful and remote beaches; reaching it on the singletrack is a genuine riding reward. Cliff edges are high and the terrain is seriously advanced — full concentration required.

Port St Johns’s Character

Port St Johns has a bohemian, alternative character — a Wild Coast town that has attracted artists, backpackers and nature lovers for decades. The combination of extraordinary natural scenery, good food and relaxed atmosphere makes it one of the Eastern Cape’s finest destinations.

Getting There

Port St Johns is at the end of the R61 on the Wild Coast. GPS: -31.6289, 29.5312.
