Barberton Geology Route

The Barberton Makhonjwa Mountains are one of the world’s most significant geological features — an exposed greenstone belt containing rocks 3.5 billion years old, making this some of the oldest visible geological formations on Earth. The mountains were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2018 and the 30km Geology Route explores this extraordinary ancient landscape on rocky mountain tracks and gravel roads.

What to Expect

Rocky mountain tracks and gravel roads on advanced mountainous terrain. The ancient greenstone rocks create a distinctive riding surface — hard, angular and technically demanding — with the geological history of the Earth’s early crust literally underfoot. The mountain scenery is dramatic and the views from the upper sections across the Lowveld are exceptional. Barberton’s gold-rush history adds a further layer of historical depth.
