Kgaswane Waterfall Trail

Kgaswane Mountain Reserve (formerly Rustenburg Nature Reserve) sits on the summit and northern slopes of the Magaliesberg above Rustenburg — a 4,500-hectare North West Parks reserve proclaimed in 1967 that protects pristine Highveld and sour bushveld on the ancient quartzite Magaliesberg range. The reserve is renowned for its breeding herd of sable antelope, its Cape vulture colony and its panoramic views over Rustenburg, the Pilanesberg and the Waterberg.

The Baviaanskrans Route

The 19.5km Baviaanskrans Route is Kgaswane’s most rewarding trail — covering the reserve’s highlights including the waterfall viewpoint (accessible only on foot or by bike on the trail) and the Garden of Remembrance. The route is classified as intermediate but the Magaliesberg’s terrain means significant elevation change. Overnight facilities with basic huts are available — note that winter can be cold at this elevation.
